Unfortunately those articles do not address the issue of being able to select an external USB mic as was possible in windows 8.

Thank you for these articles. As Motorbtr pointed out below, however, they don't address my question. Any other thoughts?

Is there really no one who can answer this question? This seems pretty basic, and no one from Microsoft has been able to help me so far. Anyone? Bueller?

Same issue here! I had enough issues with the Windows 10 upgrade I'm not really willing to go through the hassle of downgrading again. The only fix I have been able to find is that I cannot use the Windows Camera App to actually record video... I have to go through Windows Live Movie Maker for video, or Audacity for audio recording. Read, Microsoft: Camera App is hereby pretty much useless for any production quality video.

Glad to know I'm not alone... but can someone please help fix this???

Thanks for your response. The troubleshooter did not help. I think the problem with the app is in the programming somehow because it does not register with the system-default microphone, which I have set to be the external mic. It still uses the internal microphone, and the app does not have an internal setting that allows me to select which microphone is used. Any further suggestions?

The only way is to open the webcam, minimixe go to sound recorder, open that, then maximixe the video app.No internal settings for mic selection, etc. Exist, not that I have found.Have fun!

Unlike the useless response from the Microsoft representative, I actually found a solution. I disabled all microphones except the one I wanted to use, then I used the camera app. The camera app doesn't give you the option to choose your microphone, but it does select another microphone if the microphone built into the laptop is disabled.
